Breakthroughs

Probably the most rewarding sensation during this journey is to realize you're able to do something you weren't able to do before you put in some effort. Let's call it a breakthrough!

As we get older, we probably experience this less often. Clearly as opposed to our earliest days when we pretty much have to learn everything.

Recognizing barriers and setting goals is the one thing. Maybe one day I'll still be able to perform a decent Ollie on my skateboard. At least with my (still) stronger foot forward! Compared to my main goals, that's thankfully been relatively low prio :P

The other angle is being actively open to surprises. After walking away from sessions at the school gym, I remember thinking "wow couldn't do this before", and with that being happy about having progressed.

That's quite different from e.g. playing a match where you're always struggling, and might end up losing, also overshadowing if you've played well. Making out something concrete that you acquired then is more difficult as well.

So for my own practice sessions, I've been keeping an eye out for such sensations. (I trust that they will at some point materialize in matches. Will take note of it!)

A breakthrough could be a small thing. Maybe it's just throwing a ball from a new and different angle. being able to catch it behind the back. Or juggling with the weaker hand without tensing up. Or having a first 10-stroke zigzag rally with your practice partner.

On the spectrum of breakthroughs, the big ones then may be tearing down some norm. In a good way.

As you might have figured, one of my goals here is for it to be completely normal to practice and play forehands on both wings, optionally employ backhands, and step on court with 2 racquets if you like.

We have 2 hands, so why not ;)
